Return to Civil War Chaplains main page

Anselm Smith enlisted on August 21, 1862, and mustered as a sergeant into Company D of the 164th New York Infantry (“Corcoran’s Zoaves”) part of the famed Irish Legion. He was at one time busted back to private, but by 1864 he had risen back to the rank of sergeant. He was severely wounded May 18, 1864 at the battle of Spotsylvania Court House, where his arm was so mangled that it had to be amputated. The curious thing is that he was not discharged from the service until months after the war had ended!
