Father Gallus Erhardt
Rev. Father Gallus Earhardt

Father Gallus Erhardt is noted in reports as working on the construction of a Benedictine monastery at San Jose, TX near San Antonio in church records from December 1861. Construction on the monastery was started in 1859, but it was abandoned in 1867 due to high mortality among the monks.
The above CDV is dated “1863 June St Vincent,” which places Father Erhardt back at the prime Benedictine abbey in the US. Sometime in 1862 to early 1863, he made it through enemy territory back to Pennsylvania!
The secondary inscription continues “he left for germany the 28 February 1864.” (The arch abbott of the US and many of the monks were from Germany.)
Records show Father Erhardt back in the US at the Church of the Assumption in Syracuse, NY 1869-1872
