Henry Vogel joined the 61st New York Infantry as chaplain on January 18, 1862, and served with the regiment throughout the war. Promoted to double duty as assistant surgeon after Gettysburg, on November 20, 1863, he spent the rest of the war tending his soldiers’ bodies as well as souls at Cold Harbor, The Wilderness, Spotsylvania Court House and Petersburg, and was with the regiment at Lee’s surrender at Appomattox Court House.
