Luther P French

Return to Civil War Chaplains main page

Luther French joined the 20th Maine Infantry on October 17, 1862 and served with them at Gettysburg, where while defending Little Round Top, the regiment ran out of ammunition, so fixed bayonets and charged downhill at Hood’s Confederates, breaking the attack and preventing the Union army from being flanked. Some credit the 20th Maine with saving the battle of Gettysburg by this action.
